London International Chess Tournament: a campaign, by Sean March
London has, at various times, been the absolute centre of the chess world. It's high time there was another world-class tournament in the city, in the style of the GLC tournaments of 1980, 1982, 1984 and 1986. These featured an amazing collection of top chess stars, including Karpov, Korchnoy, Spassky, Larsen, Short, Portisch and numerous others. They were fantastic events and are greatly missed.

THe Grandmaster and the Volcanic Ashtray
I was playing former world champion Dr Max Euwe in the 1973 UK v Holland match on board one , while on board two Donner the Dutch Grandmaster was playing against Penrose. Donner was a chain smoker and he did not finish each cigarette perfectly.

2008 Staunton Memorial Tournament
Simpson's-in-the-Strand London, August 7-18, 2008
Grandmaster Michael Adams, the UK's highest ranked player, has won the sixth Staunton Memorial tournament at Simpson's-in-the-Strand, London, ahead of a field which makes it the strongest all-play-all grandmaster event to have been held in the UK this century. The following game was instrumental in Adams victory.
